Lupines can be grown from seed, but the seed must be scarified (scratched) and then soaked for 24 hours to enhance germination. Lupines are often found clustered around rocky drainage ditches or on the edge of gravelly pits, because the seed has been scratched by the surrounding rocks and thus germination has been enhanced. Lupines can be planted in late summer for blooms the following spring or in early spring. They do not like rich soil. The plants begin to bloom in June and the blooms last for no more than 3 weeks. If the blossom heads are removed before the tip flowers open, the plants will often reflower.
