Crown Royale is a high yielding, high quality, long-lived, late maturing orchardgrass variety. It is similar in maturity to Latar and Pennlate. Like other orchardgrass varieties it is a bunch type grass. However, because of its increased tillering habit there is less clumping in the field giving it an edge for pasture. Crown Royale was bred for its increased forage yield, greater tillering and resistance to foliar diseases, including leaf and stem rust. In its maturity group it has yielded at or near the top in forage trials throughout many of the areas where cool season grasses are Seeding Rate: Overseed 4-8lb/acre, New seeding 18-25lb/acre
Crown Royale, grown alone or with a legume, is an excellent choice for pasture, silage or hay. For hay or silage it fits well with alfalfa in a 3 4 cut management system, while ladino clover with Crown Royale makes excellent pasture. It recovers rapidly after grazing or mowing. This variety is both shade tolerant and drought tolerant, and it has proven to be highly palatable when grazed. It persists under continuous grazing.
Crown Royale has excellent seedling vigor. New seedings, with or without a legume, can be made either in spring or late summer, preferably by mid-August, on a well prepared firm seedbed. Crown Royale expresses its highest yield potential on fertile, well drained soils limed and fertilized according to test. However, it does well on a wide range of soil types. While the optimum soil pH for this grass is 6.0 or above it will tolerate soils with a pH of 5.5 to 8.0.
